China, according to Statista, is the “leading region by wearable devices shipment.” A larger percentage of the smartwatches produced worldwide are from China. So, it’s only natural that you’d want to know what certifications you’ll need for smartwatch importations from China.

Well, for some regions, all you might need is your import rights. However, in most regions, you’d need more than this. EEU importations, for example, need your EORI Number. In some other countries, you’d need their local certificates for importations.

In this article, we’ll get into more details. We’d also be providing you with tips on how to import your smartwatches from China. So, if you’d like to learn more, you’re at the right place! Enjoy!

Without more ado!

Certifications Required for Smart Watches That Come From China

In some cases, your import rights might be all you need to import smartwatches from China.

These rights might need you to secure a special number from a regulatory agency. This number would serve as your pass, in most cases. This means you’d have to always attach it to your goods from China any time you want to ship them.

However, for a lot of countries, you’d need more than this number. Although, this depends on your location and the established regulations in place.

We’ll be getting into more details about these certifications later.

Meanwhile, let’s get to know the code you’d need to carry out importations into the EU.

For EU: EORI Number

EORI Number is a 12-digit code preceded by 2 letters.

  • EORI (Economic Operators Registration & Identification)

The code is, usually, an extension of your VAT number. It’s something every EU exporter and importer must-have.

Without this code, you can’t import goods from anywhere in the world. It’s essentially one of the things your local customs would need to clear your goods.

The role of allocating this code to merchants lies on HMRC. Its validity is everlasting and you only need to apply once to get it.

How to Get The EORI Code?

If you’re new in the import-export industry in the EU, you’ll need your EORI.

And to get this code, you need to apply to the HMRC.

To apply,

  • Confirm the requirements for applying;
  • Get in touch with the HMRC team online to get a form. Form type usually depends on your business type and location;
  • Fill your form with relevant details;
  • Submit your form.

No charges involved.  submit your form and you’ll have your EORI Number in your email in less than a week. Once you have your EORI, you can pass it on to your supplier or shipper for customs declarations.

Other Certifications for Importing Smart Watches From China

For some countries, you might also need other certifications to import from China.

These certifications usually vary from country to country. So, you might want to confirm the one for your destination country before going ahead to secure one.

In this section of this article, we’ll be looking at a few of these as accepted in the following regions:

  • EU
  • Indonesia,
  • Ukraine,
  • Russia,
  • Dubai

Certificate of Origin

This certificate confirms where you purchased your products from. This shipping document also confirms the manufacturing details of your smartwatches.

The Certificate of Origin proves the origin of your smartwatches–which is China. It also confirms the destination country, whether Ukraine, Indonesia, or any other country.

It usually serves the  following purposes;

  • As a point reference international trade stats
  • Guarantee of product quality
  • Determinant for tariff treatment

It is necessary for many countries’ customs clearance. So, you might want to look up your destination country’s requirements to confirm if you’d need it.

To secure a certificate of origin, you can apply to your local chamber of commerce.

Your Chinese manufacturer or supplier must sign this certificate to uphold its validity.

Cost: Getting a certificate of Origin to ship your smartwatches could cost you about $50. This may vary depending on location.

Indonesia: Insurance Certificate

For imports to Indonesia, you must also have your Certificate of Origin. Besides this, the Indonesia Customs office also requests Insurance certificates.

This is proof of insurance for your goods. It also indicates the following:

  • coverage of the insurance,
  • the type, policy number,
  • as well as a lot of other necessary details about your insurance.

This certificate is essential for getting your smartwatches into Indonesia. Along with your Certificate of Origin and a few other documents.

Get them ready before shipment to avoid issues with customs clearance in Indonesia.

Ukraine: Certificate of Conformity

Ukrainian’s UkrSepro, Certificate of Compliance, is also necessary. Along with a Certificate of Origin.

Ukraine: Certificate of Conformity

This certificate is also referred to as the Declaration of Conformity.

It follows the regulations under ISO 9000. The certificate confirms your products meet the Ukrainian requirements & technical standards. It’s also a confirmation of a product’s quality as well.

Products that fall under the UkSepro certification must carry the Conformity marking. This looks like half of a star or a star with 4 points.

Ukraine: Certificate of Conformity

You can also use the following instead of the UkSepro’s sample testings:

  • CE,
  • ROHS
  • EMC, etc.

Also, this certificate varies based on validity. So, you might have to confirm the type that best suits your interest before going ahead to apply.

Russia: EAC Certificate

All products imported into the Eurasian Economic Countries must carry the EAC mark.

  • EAC: European Conformity Mark,

It confirms a product conforms to the guidelines of the Eurasian Customs Union.

EAC Certificate

You can import any smartwatches with the EAC mark into;

  • Russia,
  • Belarus,
  • and other EEU countries.

Any package headed for the EEU and marked with the EAC Certificate must carry the following:

  • Product name
  • Product type
  • Product volume and weight
  • Products components
  • Products storage conditions and instructions
  • Manufacturer’s name
  • Manufacturer’s address(es)
  • Expiry date.
  • Warning and/or usage Precautions
  • Product manual
  • Terms and conditions of use
  • Country of origin, which, in this case, would be China.

All these must be in Russian Belarussian and Kazakh.

Cost: An EAC Certificate could cost you between £650–£25,000.

Saudi Arabia: SASO Certificates of Compliance & Shipment

SASO is one important certification requested for electronic goods importation in Saudi Arabia.

  • SASO – Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization

The country’s customs rejects any product brought in without this certificate.

The Saudi Arabia customs sometimes transfers the product to their lab-testing companies. These companies will then carry out quality and safety checks. However, in other cases, they would send them back with heavy fines or bans attached.

So, you must make sure you secure this certificate beforehand. And, to do that, you’d have to apply on Saber to get your Certificates of Conformity and Shipment.

What Happens if I Don’t Have the Number and/or Certificate?

Three things could happen;

Your smartwatches could either be confiscated, returned, or tested for quality.

If the country’s customs send your product for lab-testing, The release would come with fines.

This fine could be more than double, even triple, of what you’d have to pay to secure any of the certificates.

So, you should get them ready, now. Right before you go ahead to ship your smartwatches to wherever you want them to go.

Conclusion

The certifications above are most of those you’d need to ship your smartwatches from China to:

  • EU
  • Indonesia,
  • Ukraine,
  • Russia,
  • Dubai

You have armed yourself with such valuable information. Now, importing your smartwatches would be a lot smoother. Even more, than you might have imagined it before.

Are you going to be shipping to other regions outside the ones listed here? Then, you might want to get in touch with your local customs office.

You should confirm all the requirements for the product you’re importing from China. The rest would be a lot easier from there.
